The course is for anyone interested in sign language with a commitment to learn a new language. This qualification is designed to enable learners to communicate with deaf people in sign language on a range of topics that involve simple, everyday language use. Depending on your situation and why you want to study BSL you may be entitled to have your course funded for free.

You will study: Meeting people, Exchanging personal information, Describing objects and information, Getting around, People and their lives, Goods and services, Food and drink, Numbers and quantity, Calendar, Feelings and weather, Directions, Animals, Interests and activities.

Good reading and writing skills. You do not need to complete an Introduction to Sign Language course first.

You will be assessed using a 4-unit structure which will benefit you by allowing you to gain the qualification in `bite-sized’ chunks.

Enrichment will be part of the course such as seeing and interpreter at the theatre, a visit to the Deaf club for Sing and Sign, visits from Hearing Dogs for the Deaf and Music and the Deaf.

On successful completion of the Level 1 you may wish to consider progressing to the ABC level 2 Award in Sign Language.

Assessment

All learners will complete an individual learning plan which will be discussed with their tutor throughout the course.

Financial

Adult Learners

Adult learners (19+) must provide evidence of their existing qualification at enrolment. Learners may not be able to enrol if this information is not provided when requested. If you have lost any certificates please contact your school in the first instance. If they are unable to provide a copy, you can contact one of the following exam boards (your school will be able to tell you which one applies to the exams you took):
