    The Low Carbon Heating Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship is designed for individuals who want to play a vital role in the UK’s transition to sustainable energy. This programme prepares you to install, commission, service, and maintain low and zero carbon heating and hot water systems in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.

    As an apprentice, you’ll be employed in the heating and plumbing sector while receiving structured training at ÐÇ¿ÕÓ°ÊÓ. The course typically lasts 36 months and equips you with the technical knowledge and practical skills needed to work with technologies such as air source and ground source heat pumps, solar thermal systems, and associated electrical controls.

  • What you'll learn

    You’ll gain a deep understanding of how low carbon heating systems operate, including the scientific and mechanical principles behind them. You’ll learn how to plan, size, and select appropriate systems, install and test components, and carry out routine maintenance and fault diagnosis.

    The course also covers health and safety legislation, sustainability principles, electrical safety, and how to work collaboratively with clients and other trades. You’ll develop the ability to produce risk assessments, method statements, and work programmes, and understand the importance of professional conduct and continuous development
  • Entry requirements

    There are no formal qualifications needed to start the Low Carbon Heating Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship—just a strong interest in sustainable technologies and a desire to work in the heating and energy sector. This programme is ideal for individuals with some experience in plumbing, heating, or construction, or those progressing from a Level 2 qualification.

    However, some employers may set their own entry requirements, such as GCSEs in English, Maths, and ICT at Grade 4/C or above. If you have not yet achieved these, you will be required to complete Functional Skills Level 2 in English and Maths as part of your apprenticeship. Don’t worry—ÐÇ¿ÕÓ°ÊÓ will support you throughout your training.
  • How will I be assessed?

    You’ll be assessed throughout the apprenticeship through practical tasks, written assignments, and a portfolio of evidence. Your college tutor and employer will help you track your progress and prepare for your final assessment.

    At the end of the programme, you’ll complete an End Point Assessment (EPA), which includes:

    A practical assessment with observation and questions
    A professional interview with an independent assessor
    A multiple-choice knowledge test
    These assessments are designed to confirm your competence and readiness to work independently in the industry

    To begin the apprenticeship, you’ll need to secure employment with an organisation willing to support you as an apprentice. While it is your responsibility to find and apply for suitable roles, ÐÇ¿ÕÓ°ÊÓ is here to help. We have a dedicated Job Shop located within the college, where you can meet with an Employer Engagement Advisor for tailored support and advice on how to apply for vacancies and prepare for interviews.

  • Future opportunities

    After completing this apprenticeship, you’ll be qualified to work as a Low Carbon Heating Technician, Heat Pump Installer, or Renewable Energy Engineer. You may also choose to progress to a Level 4 or 5 qualification in building services engineering or energy management.
